Augmented reality for Android getting a boost

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

A variety of Android applications featuring augmented reality have hit the market recently. Although technically in my opinon tagging an object in camera vision with a dot is not really augmented reality, nor does it reach its full potential that way, it is certainly interesting to see programmers get enthusiastical about the concept.

The latest addition in AR is a traffic program that allows users in Toronto to see real time images of traffic on their route, thus enabling users to avoid traffic jams, or to avoid getting on certain roads even before leaving the house.

Nokia introduces Atom based "Booklet 3G" with 3.5G, a-gps and HD screen

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

Nokia has announced a netbook based on the US15W-chipset. That means it will have an Intel Atom Z530 processor. The netbook will be capable of HD playback and sports a 10 inch, high resolution (HD) screen.

It is impressive to see the amount of netbooks emerging capable of HD playback. It seems like Tegra netbook producers are facing some fierce competition in the future. The Nokia netbook is expected in December and it is rumored to ship with Windows 7, meaning that Nokia is not counting on Maemo for a netbook breakthrough.

I think this netbook can be very interesting, however I am a bit disappointed that it doesn't have a touchscreen, which would have been quite interesting with Windows 7 installed.

TomTom application coming to Android, Android navigation to step up to the next level

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

Exciting news for Android fans longing for quality navigation: TomTom executives have indicated that it will not be long before a TomTom app for Android becomes available.

"We cannot ignore such a successful platform as Android. HTC is an important partner of ours and Android is becoming increasingly important too."

This is good news for the Android navigation market. Not only will this encourage the competition to produce better software, having a TomTom app is in itself an awesome deal. TomTom is still considered the pinnacle of navigation software and using my HTC Hero with TomTom will definitely convince me to leave my old N95 at home when navigating to, say, inner city Berlin.

The Ultraportable MSI Wind12 U200, World's first Penryn ULV/GMA4500MHD netbook

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

MSI has released a 12,1 inch beauty of a netbook. This little powermachine sports up to 4GB of RAM controlled by the new Intel Penryn SFF ULV processor. Now if that is not unique enough for a netbook: The new MSI prodigy comes with the Intel GMA4500MHD chipset which supports 1080p playback. The screen has a 1366 by 768 resolution which is really good and will let you enjoy HD playback for what it's supposed to. Of course 1080p will be scaled down, but hey, what netbook out there lets you watch HD at all? The only let down is the lack of an SSD. But then again, HDD will give you more space at a lower cost, so with HD playback in mind, this is a reasonable choice.

The price range of this tiny monster is set between 500 and 700 euros. Boy, I am getting really excited to see netbook technology progress this fast. This might in fact be a serious competitor to the new Tegra based netbooks. Of course, the MSI U200 will have to make a bit of a price drop in order to become a true threat to cheap low power Tegra netbooks, but it's a start!

HTC Hero ROM update in action

Paul O'Brien at Modaco.com has briefly demoed a so called ROM update to the HTC Hero. The video below shows that the HTC Hero is smooth indeed, but truthfully, I can't really tell a difference from my device as it is right now. What would be really interesting, is to see what the update does for flicking through photo albums and the likes as that right now presents the most, albeit very minimal, lag.

Here's a look at the update: HTC Hero ROM update in action

Virtual or real? Augmented Reality with Layar for Android

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

Who ever thought, like me, that going online and researching stuff meant never getting out in public again, is now proven wrong. A new Android App called Layar provides a sort of augmented reality browser that will display information in real time while filming the outside world, which obviously means you need to be in the outside world.

The latest and greatest Android program provides tons of information on tons of subjects like real estate, ATMs, twittering people and more. Of course I have my doubts on what this will do to battery life, as a phone is not really meant for constant filming, plus I have serious doubts on efficiency, compared to, say, googling a certain subject. But still this could make for a fun app when you're lost and need to find a public bathroom. I'll speak no more, go check it out for yourself:

HTC Sense UI now available on iPhone, smile

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

Some genius from RedmondPie has made HTC's Sense UI available to jailbroken iPhones. Now I think this is truly awesome. Not just because the HTC Sense UI is great as it is, it actually allows iPhone owners to be something they hadn't been until now: Free. Of course the jailbroken part has something to do with that freedom. But still, being able to customize your iPhone homescreen is pretty cool I'd say. Either way, one can of course skip the cumbersome part of jailbreaking one's phone by getting an Android in the first place, but not so many people out there are that lucky, that they can switch contracts right away. Acer to bring three touchscreen netbooks to market

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

According to Digitimes, an Acer project manager has stated that Acer will deliver three Windows 7 powered Touchscreen Netbooks. The interesting thing about this is that Acer is looking into in-cell touch technology. In-cell touch technology builds directly on TFT-LCD panels and is cheaper than regular touch solutions.

It is expected that in-cell touch panels will go into mass production second half of 2009. With Windows 7 coming up it is likey that netbook manufacturers will turn to touchscreen functionality en masse. Competetion will most likeley focus on price, since specs are limited by Microsoft. In-cell touch technology may very well deliver an excellent price quality ratio. Of course other netbooks, like the Tegra powered ones, will not be bound by Microsoft per se and thus come up with even better performance, especially in terms of HD playback.

Nokia's OVI mail application reaches 1 million mark

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

According to Nokia, its Ovi email application has been activated a million times on Nokia devices. While only 650,000 accounts were in fact created, Nokia still considers this a landmark in the development of OVI software and a sign that there is "a real appetite in the developing world for these types of tailored services".

However, Nokia still has a long way to go in my opinion. If you consider that Gmail has well over 100 million users worldwide, who are now able to seemlessly integrate their accounts into Android phones, it seems like Nokia is so far behind, it might actually never catch up.

"More than just reaching a company milestone, this proves to us that there is a real appetite in the developing world for these types of tailored services," said Tom Furlong, head of Consumer Messaging at Nokia. "For first-time email users, Ovi Mail provides a digital identity and we are thrilled by its rapidly rising adoption rate."

Second phonewatch debuts in France: Samsung S9110 to be released this month

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

A couple of days ago the LG GD910 phonewatch was announced to be sold by Orange France. It seems like the GD910 wasn't the only smart watch on the block. In 1999, Samsung introduced the world’s first watch phone, the SPH-WP10, which according to Samsung, became a landmark mobile product. Ten years later and little more than two weeks ago Samsung announced the S9110 watchphone which, by coincidence (or is it..?) happens to be sold in France this month too. The price is less shocking than LG's wristcell, in fact it costs half of LG's shiny gem: EUR 450. No word on mandatory subscriptions though. The phonewatch by Samsung is not 3G capable but it does have a touchscreen. Full specs below:

Network - GPRS (900 / 1800MHz)

Value added features - MP3, Voice recognition, Voice memo, Speakerphone support, Anti-scratch
Connectivity - Bluetooth® 2.1

HTC Hero: Real life user experience, first notes: Two days of joy

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

Yesterday morning I received the HTC hero by delivery. Since then I made some videos of the device while unboxing, which will be posted in the next few days. For now I just wanted to share with you my initial experiences with the smartphone here.

I received the final product, a white, unbranded, European HTC Hero. Before I decided to get this phone, I did some thorough research on the internet to two contenders, the Hero and the iPhone. After reading so many mildly negative reviews about the Hero, on Engadget, Gizmodo and other sites I decided that I should try out the HTC Hero myself. Though first I had a serious hands-on with my neighbour's iPhone 3GS. I wasn't very impressed with the 3GS, even though the user experience was absolutely great in terms of smoothness, videoplayback and of course its iPod functionality.

Having had an HTC Wizard in the past I have become really skeptical about HTC. Especially since they have had serious issues with Qualcomm hardware. However, I had by now read so many good stuff about the Hero, Android and HTC's Sense UI, that I figured this phone would probably rock in terms customization. So despite the negative reviews about the Hero's speed I took the jump and ordered the HTC Hero, as customization seemed like a major virtue over the iPhone. The iPhone seemed a bit boring even when it comes to customizing and integration of apps (i.e. multitasking).

Well I have one thing to say: All of the criticism on the Hero's speed seems greatly exaggerated to me. Lag is barely noticeable and I do not believe the iPhone 3GS is that much faster as some reviewers would like you to believe. I have to add though, the devices that were reviewed in the US could have been different from the ones shipping to European customers. In addition I am only talking about general user experience, I haven't had a chance to test videoplayback (except for youtube which seemed slightly choppy compared to the 3GS) and of course I haven't taken a ton of pictures or videos on the device yet.

when it comes to browsing the web: this phone is everything I ever looked for in a smartphone (and I have been longing for an experience like this for almost a decade now). Especially the keyboard makes things really easy. Of course the iPhone 3GS delivers a great user experience too. I should add that the 3GS in fact does smoother pinching. But the iPhone 3GS does not deliver the extras you get on the Hero, like open source software, a great virtual keyboard and seemless integration of apps like twitter and facebook.

Thus far I am really satisfied with the Hero's performance and I would like to tell those still in doubt: Go a store and try the Hero for yourself. Don't rely on the vast amount of reviews already out there. One thing to note: the WiFi connection in the store may be slow and thus make browsing seem sluggish. However, At home the browsing went like a breeze.

Unboxing and Hero in action videos soon!

Official Facebook application for Android

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

As a big fan of Android, an open source smartphone operating system, I am pleased to see that developers are coming up with a huge amount of applications for Android handsets. Although Android market is not as developed as the iPhone Appstore yet, most main stream applications are available to the Android platform.

The latest application is rumored to be an official Facebook app. HTC Hero's Sense UI has integrated Facebook elements but there is no homescreen widget available unlike, for instance, Peep. It is expected that the new Android Facebook app does have a homescreen widget, making it more convenient to keep your friends up to date and vice versa.

Dell discontinues Mini 12 inch. Progress setback?

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

As netbooks are in favour with so many because of their portability, according to chief blogger Lionel Menchaca Dell decided to discontinue its Mini 12 inch series.

I own a 10 inch EEE PC and I have to say it's large enough to read from and small enough to actually carry around. In that sense I think focusing on the less sizable displays is a good thing. But at the same time I do feel that manufacturers need to continue to improve display quality, whether it be working on OLED displays or readable high resolution screens.

Some have criticized netbooks for limiting the advance of technology by being low budget. People supposedly now long for cheap netbooks and no longer desire high tech computer parts, thus innovation would suffer.

I personally don't believe this to be true. As a netbook user I don't want to see innovation drop, I want manufacturers to make more out of little and to keep the price as low as possible. As low as possible doesn't mean for free, but it means that manufacturers will be forced to work more efficiently while keeping up quality work.

Sure I replaced my 15,4 inch notebook with my EEE PC, but that doesn't mean that I don't need my netbook to operate faster, have a better screen etc.

Let's hope Dell's decision to discontinue the 12 inch Mini means shifting focus to the progression of netbooks, and not degradation.

Apple's Mac Tablet confirmed by analyst Gene Munster

Save to delicious Saved by 0 users

Apple's ghost Mac tablet will come out for a fact next year, says senior Analyst Gene Munster. Of course, with all this buzz, something is probably going on. But as Munster does have some authority on Apple rumors, i.e. he is usually right, it is kind of interesting that Munster comes forward 'confirming' rumors. Munster believes the Mac tablet will come out early next year and will be priced somewhere between $500 and $700. Not very cheap indeed. A common netbook with 3G and the whole shabang will run you down only a few hundred dollars and with the Tegra devices due soon, you will get a whole lot more bang for that buck. Tegra has crazy long battery life and is capable of HD 720p playback. Of course the Mac tablet may in fact sport a Tegra soc itself, making it a real winner. But that remains to be seen.

Munster relies on statements made by an Asian supplier. This supplier reported to have received an order by Apple for a bunch of touchscreens.

Even more interesting, is the fact that the App store will be accessible from the tablet and that Apple is considering selling Ebooks through Itunes. That means the device will be suitable as an E-reader, without the E ink paper of course.

I am not sure how well existing devices like the EEE PC T91 are doing in terms of touch experience, but Zune HD's debut this fall may be a really good indication of what's to come.
